SIP trunking cost is not one number. It is a per-minute rate, a number rental, optional channel fees, billing increments, and a stack of taxes and regulatory charges, and the model you choose changes which provider is cheapest. This page explains each part, then points to the full provider comparison.

## What Does SIP Trunking Cost?

For metered US voice, our comparison of twelve providers puts the carriage itself at roughly $0.003 to $0.020 per minute depending on provider and direction, plus a small monthly fee for each phone number. That range is the reason SIP trunk prices are hard to quote: a premium retail provider and a wholesale carrier can differ by around twenty times for the same workload.

The per-minute rate is the headline, but it is rarely the biggest surprise. Billing increments, number fees, one-time setup charges, and taxes decide what you actually pay. The sections below take each in turn.

| Cost line | Typical 2026 range (from our comparison) | Notes |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Outbound voice, US, per minute | $0.0035 to $0.020 | Varies by provider and volume |
| Inbound voice, US, per minute | $0.0040 to $0.015 | Often cheaper than outbound |
| Local number (DID) rental | $0.50 to $1.50 per month | Per number you own |
| Toll-free number rental | $1.00 to $3.00 per month | Toll-free inbound minutes cost more than local |
| Per-channel plans | $25 to $50 per month per concurrent channel | Legacy model; minutes usually bundled |
| Media streaming for AI voice | $0.004 to $0.008 per minute | Included by some providers |

## SIP Trunk Pricing Models: Per-Minute vs Per-Channel vs Unlimited

There are three ways to be billed for the voice carriage, and choosing between them matters more than shaving a fraction of a cent off the rate.

Metered billing (per minute) charges for what you carry. It suits bursty traffic, such as an outbound campaign that jumps from zero to hundreds of simultaneous calls and back, because there is no idle capacity to pay for. Per-channel billing charges a flat fee for each concurrent call path and usually bundles the minutes. It only pays off when channels stay busy most of the working day. Unlimited or seat-based plans bundle voice into a per-user subscription, target human desk-phone users, and often prohibit automated dialing.

| Model | How you are billed | Best fit | Watch out for |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Metered (per minute) | Per second or minute of voice carried | Variable or bursty call volume | Rate stacking: voice, media, and number fees are separate lines |
| Per-channel | Flat monthly fee per concurrent path | High, steady volume | Paying for idle channels; failed calls above your channel limit |
| Unlimited or seat-based | Flat per user per month | Human hosted-PBX users | Not API-first; terms often ban automated dialing |
| Wholesale or committed | Negotiated rate against a monthly spend commit | Very high volume with engineering capacity | Paying for minutes you never use below the commit |

## Per-Second vs Per-Minute SIP Trunk Billing

The same rate can cost very different amounts depending on the billing increment: the unit each call is rounded up to. Per-second billing charges for the actual duration. A 60-second increment rounds every call up to the next full minute. Our comparison notes that some carriers bill in 6-second or 60-second increments, and that this matters because AI calls are often short.

The effect is easy to compute. With a 60-second increment, a 20-second call is billed as a full minute. With per-second billing it is billed as 20 seconds. The shorter your average call, the more the increment matters, and for very short calls it can matter more than the quoted rate.

| Billing increment | Minutes billed for 1,000 calls of 20 seconds | Minutes billed for 1,000 calls of 3 minutes |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Per second | About 333 minutes (20,000 seconds) | 3,000 minutes |
| 6-second increment | 400 minutes (each 20-second call rounds up to 24 seconds) | 3,000 minutes |
| 60-second increment | 1,000 minutes | 3,000 minutes |

## DID Fees, Taxes, and Regional Differences

Beyond the voice rate, a SIP trunking price usually includes several items that do not appear in a headline rate card. Our comparison lists these as the ones to ask about up front.

- Number (DID) rental: a monthly fee per number, higher for toll-free and for vanity numbers.
- E911 fees: a monthly per-number charge, plus a per-call surcharge, on US voice providers.
- Regulatory recovery and state or local taxes: our comparison estimates 15 to 25 percent on top of pre-tax US rates, and most rate cards quote pre-tax.
- Porting: a fee per number to move numbers in or out, so confirm both directions before you commit.
- Setup and registration: branded caller ID onboarding and US SMS registration can add one-time charges in the first months.
- Minimums: some providers set a monthly floor, which matters if your volume is spiky.
- Region: international and toll-free minutes are priced very differently from US local minutes, so price each destination separately rather than using one blended rate.

## SIP Trunking Cost: A Worked Example

Build your own estimate from four inputs: monthly minutes (inbound and outbound separately), average call length, number of phone numbers, and SMS volume. Then apply this formula.

Monthly cost = (outbound minutes x outbound rate) + (inbound minutes x inbound rate) + (media minutes x media rate, if charged separately) + (numbers x monthly number fee) + one-time fees amortised + taxes and regulatory charges.

For a reference point, our full comparison prices 100,000 outbound minutes per month at a metered retail rate of $0.005 per minute with media streaming included. That is about $500 for the voice, plus about $10 for ten local numbers, so roughly $510 before taxes. The same volume at a premium retail rate of $0.013 plus $0.004 for media streams comes to about $1,700 before numbers and fees. Those are the blog's figures, not a quote, and your own rate will depend on provider, volume, and contract.

## SIP Trunk Costs for AI Voice Agents

AI voice agents change the math in two ways. Their traffic is bursty, which favours metered billing over per-channel plans. And they need the audio streamed to a speech-to-text and language-model pipeline, which some providers charge for separately and others include.

If you would rather not assemble a trunk, a number inventory, and the rest of the stack yourself, Ringlyn bundles telephony into its voice platform. See the Ringlyn voice AI platform for how the pieces fit, and the pricing page for plans. The comparison blog covers each provider in detail if you want to bring your own trunk.

## Frequently asked questions

### What do SIP trunking prices usually include, and what is billed on top?

SIP trunking prices usually cover outbound minutes or channels, and sometimes inbound minutes and a number. Fees commonly billed on top are phone number rental, per-minute rates for premium or international destinations, taxes and regulatory surcharges, and any minimum monthly commitment. Compare the all-in monthly cost for your own call volume, not just the headline rate.

### How much does a SIP trunk cost per month?

It depends mainly on minutes. A metered trunk has a per-minute rate plus a small monthly fee per phone number, so a low-volume user may pay little more than number rental while a high-volume user pays mostly for minutes. Per-channel plans charge a flat monthly fee per concurrent call path instead. Our comparison lists $25 to $50 per channel per month for the legacy channel model, and $0.50 to $1.50 per month for a local number.

### What is the difference between SIP trunk pricing per minute and per channel?

Per-minute pricing bills the time you actually use. Per-channel pricing bills a fixed monthly fee for each simultaneous call you can have, with minutes usually bundled. Per-channel works for steady, high volume. Per-minute works better when volume rises and falls.

### Is per-second billing cheaper than per-minute billing for SIP trunks?

For the same quoted rate, per-second billing never costs more, because it charges the actual call duration, while a 60-second increment rounds each call up. The gap grows as calls get shorter. Compare the effective cost for your average call length, not just the headline rate.

### What hidden fees should I expect on a SIP trunking bill?

Commonly E911 fees, regulatory recovery charges, state and local taxes, number porting fees, setup or registration fees, and minimum monthly charges. Our comparison suggests budgeting 15 to 25 percent on top of pre-tax US usage rates for taxes and regulatory charges, so ask for an all-in quote.

### Why do SIP trunk prices vary so much between providers?

Premium retail providers charge for developer tooling, support, and features, while wholesale carriers sell bare minutes at lower rates but expect you to run more of the stack. Our 2026 comparison found around a twenty-times spread between the cheapest and the most expensive option for the same outbound workload.

### Does the SIP trunk cost include the AI voice platform?

No, not on its own. A trunk carries the call. The speech-to-text, language model, and text-to-speech are separate costs unless you use a bundled platform. Ringlyn bundles the telephony layer into its platform pricing, so you do not buy a trunk separately.

### Where can I compare SIP trunk providers side by side?

Our SIP Trunk Pricing 2026 comparison covers twelve providers with per-minute rates, number fees, media streaming, and hidden-fee checklists. This page explains the pricing concepts, and the blog post has the provider-level numbers.
